BMC commissioner orders uniform cremation for all COVID-19 positive victims, changes within hours

MUMBAI: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner Pravin Pardeshi landed one controversy briefly for his notifications asking to cremate the dead body of Covid-19 positive patient at mortuary irrespective of religion to prevent the spreading of coronavirus.

In Mumbai, the highest numbers of Covid 19 patients were reported with six deaths. Municipal Commissioner issued the earlier notifications dated March 30, 2020, that all bead bodies of Covid 19 positive patients will be cremated at mortuary irrespective of their religions.

"If anyone insist of the burial of the dead body, he will be permitted only if he takes the dead body out of Mumbai's jurisdictions and transport and other arrangement expenses will be bored by the family of the dead person," stated in the circular.

However, Aslam Sheikh, city guardian minister and Congress legislator took the objections of this circular citing this is biased towards the minority.

Besides, the Christian community also raised the objections saying the dead body of any person should be cremated as per the respective religion of that particular person.

The Maha Vikas Aghadi government is lead by Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray while supported by NCP and the Congress. Congress and the NCP objected this circular of the BMC’s commissioner that is controlled by the Shiv Sena in Mumbai.

Then, Pravin Pardeshi was forced to amend his earlier circular.

In the amended circular, the dead body of Covid 19 person is allowed to be buried within the city if the burial ground is big enough. The circular also insists that the dead body should wrap up in a plastic bag that will obstruct the decomposing process and more than five people should not be the part of this funeral.

Nawab Malik, minority affairs minister and NCP legislator said that the BMC commissioner has withdrawn the controversial circular now.
